How to measure
Getting the right fit starts with accurate measurements.
A coat or jacket should move with you, not fight against you and the only way to achieve that is by knowing your true proportions.
Use a soft tape measure and take your time, measure twice if you’re unsure.
Always measure over light clothing, keep the tape flat against the body, and don’t pull it tight.
If you already own a coat that fits well, lay it flat and note the key measurements:
- Shoulder width
- Pit to pit
- Sleeve length
- Back length
You can then compare these with the size chart.
Combining your body measurements with those from an existing garment gives the most complete picture of fit, helping ensure your coat feels balanced, comfortable and properly proportioned from the start.
Chest
Start with the tape at the centre of your chest.
Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, usually across your nipples and around your back until you're back where you started.
Keep the tape level and flat. It can be very helpful to do this in front of a mirror so you can make sure the tape isn't sagging.
Take a normal breath in and out before noting the number.
Shoulder width
Stand tall and relax your arms.
Place the tape at the edge of one shoulder, right where it starts to curve into your arm.
Run the tape across the top of your back, over your neck to the same point on the other shoulder.
This can be a tough one to get right. The key is in identifying the point at which your shoulders end and your arm begins.
It’s easiest to find that point by touch. Stand naturally and feel along the top of your shoulder with your fingertips. You’ll notice a slight curve or dip where the bone of your shoulder ends and the round part of your upper arm begins.
If you’re unsure, lift your arm slightly to the side; you’ll feel the joint move under your fingers. Mark that spot on each side with a small piece of tape or a finger, then measure across the back between them, following the natural curve rather than a perfectly straight line.
Sleeve Length
This is the easiest one.
Start from the top of your shoulder (the same point you used for shoulder width).
Run the tape down the outside of your arm to your wrist bone.
Bend your elbow slightly to make sure you’ve got enough movement.
