The Lawrence Jacket
Hello.
I spent four years developing and perfecting the Lawrence jacket.
From the fabrics to the fit, from the buttons to the quilting and from the cuffs to the lining, each jacket is a physical representation of thousands of hours of knowledge, expertise, and passion.
36 hours after opening the order books, the Lawrence sold out.
But this is just the start and although Barnfield will continue to evolve, every launch will benefit from that effort. The same level of care, attention to detail and commitment that went into the Lawrence will go into everything we make.
It’s not just about making clothes; it's about crafting pieces that I'm proud to make and you're proud to wear.

Four Years
In January 2019, I sketched out a design on the back of an envelope. A fitted, military style jacket with a stiff collar.
It had patch pockets on the chest and welt pockets at the hips. A field jacket inspired by my Great Grandfather’s WW1 uniform but modernised and redesigned to be sharper.
More dress uniform than army surplus jacket.
Since then, I’ve worked day in, day out, for four years with experts and passionate craftspeople to bring the Lawrence jacket to life.
Over the course of six individual prototypes, it’s been perfected to create the jacket I envisioned.
The jacket I promised.
Fabrics
& Fittings
The Lawrence is made with a heavyweight 350gsm GOTS certified organic cotton gabardine. It’s genuinely beautiful. It’s also tough AF.
My Great Grandfather was the initial inspiration for the design of the Lawrence but he’s also been a guiding hand in my choices along the way.
Any jacket he bought would have been an investment. And it would have had to last.
By asking “would my Great Grandfather be proud to wear this jacket?” I started researching heritage fabrics. Materials that would’ve been sought after for their quality and durability when he was alive.
WWI trench coats were made of Thomas Burberry’s gabardine. It’s tightly woven, so it’s sharp. It’s rain-resistant, breathable and durable.
Perfect.
Made in
Great Britain
At one point, the British textiles and clothing industry was the largest in the world. Now we make less than 1% of the world’s clothing.
We may no longer make the most clothing but we certainly have the expertise and passion to make the best.
By focusing on quality over quantity, I’ve spent the past four years developing connections and personal relationships, finding passionate people who do one thing well and bringing their expertise to bear to create your jacket.
When you buy a Barnfield jacket, you’re supporting an incredible group of individuals and companies. Each of them keeping their part of the industry alive.
Limited Edition
Because the mill that produces our gabardine has paused all production, only 50 jackets are guaranteed to be made in 2023.
Given the meteoric rise in cotton prices, it’s also very likely that the price of any subsequent runs will increase by a minimum of 20%.
When my Great Grandfather signed up to the war effort in 1914, every able bodied man who worked for him followed. When they shipped out, they were all part of the same regiment known as a ‘Pals Brigade’.
Whenever we wear a piece of clothing, we tell people what we believe in before we say a word. Wearing a Barnfield jacket tells the world that you champion quality and time in a craft over immediacy, individuality over cost, sustainability over trends.
When the first preorder closed out, just 36 hours after opening, 50 people became the first members of the Barnfield Pals Brigade.
50 people connected through shared values worn on their backs.
Lining Artwork
I first saw Thomas Moore’s art on Instagram and was blown away by the intricacy, accuracy and sheer commitment that was evident in every single piece he'd published.
As I scrolled through his work, an idea formed. What if we could create a bespoke piece of art to line the inside of the Lawrence jacket? Not a repeating pattern but a piece that told a story, that spoke to people and that connected us all.
Through 118 hand drawn illustrations on a 2.5 metre backdrop of Great Britain's road network, the piece that he’s created for the Lawrence tells a story of journey and of transformation. From winter up in Scotland, down to summer in Cornwall, each illustration tells it's own individual story.
Given the size of the artwork, although the lining of the body is completely covered, each jacket will only feature a part of the whole piece. This means that each one will be totally unique.
My hope has always been this uniqueness will create a talking point that translates into connections.
Time in a pursuit
“The moment that people know a project took 50 hours, 100 hours, two years - it tells a deeper story and people still really appreciate time in a pursuit, time in a craft.”
Thomas Moore, Lást Maps

Initial preorders took place in three phases:
Early access opened Saturday 29th April at 11AM (BST)
Public access opened Monday 1st May at 11AM (BST)
Preorders closed 36 hours later when all 50 jackets sold out.
-
Production started as soon as preorders closed out on the 6th of May and took 6 months to finish up.
-
Due to rising costs of raw cotton, the mill that manufactures the gabardine that the Lawrence has been designed with, has paused all production.
To guarantee production this year and at £595, I’ve bought the very last roll of gabardine that the mill had in stock.
It’s enough to make 50 jackets.
-
3400+ people have registered their interest to get their hands on a Lawrence jacket.
Given that I can only make 50, it’s only fair to limit orders to one jacket per person.
-
You can use Stripe or PayPal which means you can pay with all major credit cards, debit cards and Apple Pay.
-
All the ‘Buy now, pay later’ platforms require that goods are delivered as soon as payment is made.
Because the Lawrence is only available through preorder, we’re not able offer these services.
-
If, for any reason, you’re not 100% happy with your jacket, I’ll happily take it back. I’ll need to receive it back within 14 days of delivery and it’ll need to be in perfect condition so that I can get it to the next person on the wait list.
-
I can only make 50 jackets. That said, if you realise that you have the wrong size when you take delivery, get in touch within 7 days. If someone else is in the same boat and needs your size, I’ll arrange a swap as long as the jacket is in perfect condition.

The Lawrence is designed to be a fitted jacket. It's true to size when worn over a single layer. If you plan on wearing it with multiple layers or an armoured undershirt, go up a size.
The size guide is here and lists out all the most important details along with a guide to help you take the measurements. I’ll also happily chat with you personally to run through everything in detail - just email me back and we can set up a call.
There’ll be an opportunity to confirm your size before it goes into production and you’ll get a quick survey by email after you’ve placed your order which will help me to direct you. Hopefully this will give you the best shot of getting the right size.
-
No. It isn’t armoured and isn’t considered PPE. But, it can of course be worn with an armoured undershirt if you do plan on wearing it to ride in. Just remember to order a size up.
-
Right now, I only have enough fabric to guarantee 50 jackets. I’m on the hunt for other suppliers and if I find one that meets the level of quality I'm looking for I’ll look to do another run. But it's not on the horizon in the immediate term.
Given the meteoric rise in cotton prices, it's also very likely that the price will increase by a minimum of 20%.
Whatever happens, the number of Lawrence jackets made with this fabric and with Tom's artwork won’t ever exceed 300 as originally advertised.

Shipping within mainland UK is included and deliveries are fulfilled by FedEx.
Fees vary for international deliveries which exclude taxes and import duties.
These vary from country to country and there is more info here.

Unfortunately taxes and import duties aren't included for those of you outside of the UK and will be charged by the courier on delivery.
Because each country charges different rates for both, it's very difficult to calculate what you will pay although you can use this calculator to estimate.
