How we make

First comes the garment.

Coats, jackets and knitwear, designed and made in England. A structured coat, a casual jacket and knitwear are each made differently, so each is offered differently. Here is what we make, how to order it and when it reaches you.

A peacoat in double-layered melton.

Coats

A peacoat in double-layered melton.

The Hampden is a double-breasted peacoat in Abraham Moon melton wool, with angled Polish cuffs and natural horn buttons engraved on the edge. It is a structured coat with real weight, and a coat like that only looks right when the chest, shoulders and sleeves sit exactly where they should.

Why it's made to order

So the proportions are right for you. Making each Hampden individually means we can offer eighteen sizes, XS to 2XL in Short, Regular and Long and confirm with you personally which one will fit before anything is cut. Each coat is made by a single tailor.

  1. We confirm your size and length with you personally.
  2. Your coat is made by a single tailor.
  3. You hear from us at each stage until it arrives, 12 weeks after you order.
Designs that stay. Cloths that change.

Jackets

Designs that stay.
Cloths that change.

Our jackets are the more casual side of Barnfield. Once a design is settled it stays and is offered in a different cloth over time.

How they are offered

Jackets are available by preorder, in a fixed number. Each cloth is made as one limited run. When the order books open, the price, cloth, number made and delivery date are confirmed, and they close once the run is taken.

What you reserve

One jacket from that run, in a finished design and a chosen cloth, paid in full when you reserve it.

We never ask you to commit to a sketch. The pattern, fit samples and cloth are settled first, and every decision is recorded on The Ledger.

Merino knitwear, hand-linked in England.

III. Knitwear

Merino knitwear, hand-linked in England.

The Anson is a slim merino crew neck made for layering. The Slingsby is a waffle-knit merino cardigan with a shawl neck and natural horn buttons. Both are linked by hand, stitch by stitch, for a flat, neat seam that sits cleanly under a coat.

How it is offered

Knitwear is ready to order now, with no wait. Each colour is knitted as a single limited run, one colour at a time.

When a colour sells out

It is archived. A popular colour may return, but rarely, and only after a long gap, with new colours introduced in between.

The first jacket: The Lawrence

The first jacket: The Lawrence

The first Barnfield jacket.

Inspired by a photograph of our founder’s great grandfather in his WW1 uniform. Each jacket was cut in organic cotton gabardine, lined with unique artwork penned by Thomas Moore over British wool quilting and finished with laser etched corozo buttons. Fifty were made available, and when the order books opened every one was reserved in just under 36 hours.

When do I pay for a jacket?
